Abstract

Environmental health is a key factor influencing a community's productive capacity and the economic performance of a region. Exposure to air pollution, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean water have been shown to increase the burden of disease, thus reducing work capacity, increasing absenteeism, and reducing labor efficiency. This study uses a systematic literature review method to analyze the link between environmental health and economic productivity through a review of ten scientific articles available for download from various international databases. The synthesis results demonstrate consistent findings that air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 and PM10, contributes significantly to decreased productivity through respiratory disorders, cognitive impairment, and reduced effective working hours. Poor sanitation and water quality also worsen public health conditions and have long-term economic impacts. The study also found that improvements in environmental quality, such as emission control, sanitation modernization, and clean water provision, generate substantial economic benefits through increased work capacity and reduced health costs. These findings reinforce the understanding that environmental health is not merely an ecological issue, but a strategic component of sustainable economic development and improving community well-being.
